Not sure really – they interest me too as they are such an obviously intelligent way to build up a cities density, livability and enhance the liveliness of the streets they occupy, they used to be common in areas of colonial towns and early suburbs of our cities. such as teh demolished District Six, Woodstock, Wynberg and Salt River, suburbs of Cape Town, as well as many towns such as Beaufort West , Graaf Reinett and others, they are not common now, except in a makeshift form in “townships” and informal settlements.
